Mastering the Art of Effective Combination Punching

Boxing matches, both amateur and professional, are ultimately won by landing clean and effective punches.

And the quickest way to land those punches, is to throw them in quick succession.

But it’s not just about throwing your hands as much as possible. It can take time to develop the rhythm and movement necessary for smooth combination punching.

When executed correctly, combinations will keep an opponent off balance and create even more openings.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Tensing up
  • Dropping hands
  • Leaning forward instead of rotating from the hips
  • Telegraphing punches (winding up or pausing between punches)
  • Holding breath

Core Principles for Smooth Combos:

  • Stay relaxed!! Tension ruins everything.
  • Keep your chin tucked as you throw.
  • Use your legs and hips to generate torque on every shot.
  • Less is more. Don’t overshoot and overextend.
  • Return your hands quickly to your cheekbone after each punch.
  • Breathe out in a controlled manner on every strike.
  • Always incorporate subtle head movement and/or footwork between punches.

Simple Drills to Improve Your Combos

  • Mirror Drill: While shadowboxing, throw combinations slowly. Stay relaxed, and increase speed as you throw them.
  • Heavy Bag: Throw combinations and focus on rhythm. Work on changing up the speed from punch to punch. And add a slip, pull, or roll at the end of each sequence.

Start simple and add punches as you improve.

3 Punch Combos

  • Jab – Cross – Hook
  • Jab – Hook – Cross

Use these to develop rhythm, and practice weight transfer. Focus on snapping the jab out and bringing it straight back.

4 Punch Combos

  • Jab – Cross – Hook – Cross
  • Jab – Cross – Body Hook – Head Hook
  • Jab – Cross – Hook – Uppercut

5-6 Punch Combos

  • Jab – Cross – Head Hook – Cross – Body Hook- Head Hook
  • Double Jab – Cross – Body Hook – Uppercut – Head Hook

Longer combinations work best when you change levels (head and body) and change up your speed from punch to punch.

Former pro boxer and Olympic medalist Tony Jeffries gives some great suggestions for other realistic combination ideas.
